Christopher Henwood is a market commentator and analyst. With twenty yearsʼ experience as a commodity trader, heʼs a financial specialist, but with his down- to-earth, conversational approach he offers expertise without jargon. He brings together the insight of a successful trader with the charisma of a broadcast journalist.
A former Commodities Market Specialist at Reuters, Christopher Henwood brought his insight to a global news organization and developed a distinct presence on the scene by bringing a depth of knowledge and wealth of first-hand experience to his market commentary and astute price forecasts. As a seasoned trader who understands markets and knows the ins and outs of the financial business, Chrisʼs in-depth analysis provided valuable intelligence and actionable ideas to the financial community. His clear, direct analysis of the markets appealed to both the professional traders and the average business viewer.
In 1989 Chris started as a clerk on the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) for Lehman Brothers. At the time, Lehman operated the largest energy brokerage business in the world and Henwood quickly rose through the ranks, climbing from clerk to Assistant Vice President and Nymex member in less than two years. During this time Henwood traded all of the energy markets and was tapped to trade for a new proprietary trading group being formed at the firm.
It wasnʼt long before J. Aron came calling and recruited Chris to become a key member of its energy-trading group in 1994. Henwood quickly became the lead natural gas floor trader and was promoted to Vice-President in under 22 months due to his outstanding performance and leadership. Chris played a large role in generating the groupʼs then-record-setting profits in 1997. At the start of 1998, Henwood went solo, starting his own trading operation. He employed a hybrid trading strategy-combining elements of both fundamental and technical analysis, and developed a keen sense of risk management. All trades and positions were financed personally and within the margin and regulatory framework of the exchange and the CFTC. Henwood posted eleven consecutive years of profitability, yielding a consistent triple digit return on capital.
During his tenure as a member of the Nymex, Chris was actively involved with many aspects of exchange business. He served as Vice-Chairman and Ring- Chairman for the Floor and Settlement Committees, where he was charged with maintaining an orderly market, enforcing all Exchange and CFTC rules and regulations. Henwood oversaw and directed exchange personnel and committee members to ensure proper market function. Henwood also served on the Arbitration, Appeals, Membership, Facilities, Hand-Held Technology, and Training & Education Committees. Chris was also an instrumental participant in Operation Sea Dragon; a collaborative training and education project with the United States Marine Corps.
In 2004, the commodities markets were buzzing with the prospect of electronic trading. Henwood knew the markets were in for a major transformation and decided to expand his horizons. In August of 2006 he enrolled at Rutgers School of Law – Newark where he concentrated in Securities law and Criminal law. Chris traded during the day and attended law school in the evenings and received his Juris Doctorate in May of 2010. He was admitted to the New York Bar in January of 2011. Henwood takes a keen interest in the laws and regulations that affect the markets and its participants.
